description
The Council seeks to appoint suppliers for the removal of bodies where a death has been referred to H M Coroner for Dorset for further investigation. Bournemouth Borough Council has been appointed by Dorset County Council and the Borough of Poole to be the 'relevant' local authority providing support for the Coroner's Service in Dorset. Once a death is reported to the Coroner, H M Coroner takes control of the body and may arrange for its removal to a suitable location, including a Mortuary, where the Coronor may authorise a post mortem examination to be carried out. The Coroners Officers and Officers of Dorset Police are authorised by the Coronor to instruct the Supplier to collect the body and transfer it to a suitable location. Where post mortem examination is required this will normally be conducted at Holly Tree Lodge, Public Mortuary at Bournemouth East Cemetery. Some post mortem examinations, particularly paediatric or other specialist examinations will be carried out at mortuaries located elsewhere outside Dorset. Within the contract is the transportation of organs and tissue samples for histology to locations as directed by the Coroner. The start date for the new contracts is 1st April 2019 for a three year period with the option to extend for a further year.
