The Coroner for South Yorkshire (West) is an independent Judicial Officer dealing with around 3,200 reported deaths per year in accordance with the Terms of the Coroner's Act 1988. The Medico-Legal Centre Mortuary is licensed under the Human Tissue Act 2004 and operates in compliance with the Human Tissue Authority standards.

Service Providers responsible for transporting the deceased on behalf of the HM Coroner will be expected to operate to the highest Professional Standards of Health, Safety and Hygiene, maintaining the security of the bodies in their care and treating the deceased with dignity and respect at all times.

The number of bodies to be transported will vary from year to year but indicative numbers are 1000 for the Sheffield area.
