Education Buildings Capital Projects 2018-20

Portsmouth City Council (the Council) is inviting expressions of interest from suitably experienced contractors to carry out the delivery of the expansion of Portsmouth Academy School and future construction projects for educational sites within the city.

The Portsmouth Academy School Expansion project will commence on site between 2019 and 2020. This project concerns works at Portsmouth Academy School with an estimated construction cost of approximately ?4.50m.

In addition to the Portsmouth Academy the Council will have future projects to deliver over the next 3 years. The Council reserves the right to procure further envisaged capital works for next 3 years, where the works are of a similar nature to the outlined scheme, to the total value of ?30 million through the establishment of shortlist of 5 to 6 suppliers.

The Council is programming to award the Portsmouth Academy contract during early November 2018 with commencement of works on site anticipated January 2019 with completion by early August 2020 to allow occupation by the school ready for the 2020 -2021 academic year.

The requirement is to enlarge the existing school to accommodate 1,250 secondary school pupils and 150 'year 6' primary school pupils. This equates to an increase of 290 pupil places over the current capacity of the buildings.

The proposed works at The Portsmouth Academy School can be summarised as follows:

• oConstruction of a three storey steel framed building of approximately 1500 m2 gross internal floor area
• oAlteration and refurbishment works to the existing school to provide a new student support suite and specialist classroom areas.
• oAssociated external works.
• oProvision of a two classroom temporary classroom unit for part duration of the contract period.

The existing School will remain in use during the period of the works and it is therefore a requirement that contractors are able to demonstrate that they have experience of working within an occupied school site environment on projects of similar value.
