description

Nottingham City Clinical Commissioning Group is commissioning this research study to inform how we can best work with local partners to better meet the mental health needs of the homeless and rough sleeping population in Nottingham.

Commissioners want to better understand the issues and barriers from the perspective of the homeless population and partner organisations to be able to ensure effective commissioning to meet the needs of this population and to promote and support appropriate and timely mental health service uptake.

The research will for the most part focus on the non-statutory homeless population (homeless and rough sleeping) whilst recognising some people in this cohort may move in and out of statutory homeless status or could have been classified as such.

There are four elements to the research:

  • Understanding the population: gaining a better understanding of this cohort of citizens and their mental health needs both common mental health needs and serious mental illness, including demographic data.
  • Understanding the citizen story: what were the circumstances that led to their homelessness and how could homelessness have been prevented? How have their mental health needs been supported during their homelessness and what has their experience of services/support been?
  • Understanding the stakeholder perspective: what are the issues in the system, what’s causing the issues and what needs to change?
  • Learning from good practice: learning from what works well elsewhere in the country for this population
