Beef Improvement Research Programme

Beef production makes a significant contribution to the UK farming economy, with cattle raised for meat production representing nearly12% of the £24,089 million value of gross agricultural output in 2012 . However UK food production, including beef, operates in a global market which faces economic challenges as well as competition for natural resources that are needed to feed a growing global population, whilst protecting the environment and enhancing ecosystem services from agricultural land.

The overarching policy background supporting this call for research is framed by the Government’s Foresight Report , The Future of Food and Farming: Challenges and choices for global sustainability, which under one of its key priorities - promoting sustainable intensification, recommends raising yields, increasing the efficiency with which inputs are used and reducing the negative environmental effects of food production
