Project Name: Huxley STEM teaching Lab extension.
Main Contract type: Traditional contract. JCT.
Anticipated start on site date: November 2015.
Anticipated construction length: 11-15 months variants with phased possession and sectional completion.
The Project Brief.
As a consequence of anticipated student number growth, additional life science/biology laboratory space (teaching and research) is required as part of expansion of the Faculty of Natural Sciences — within the School of Life Sciences located at the Huxley building.
The project requirement is to provide circa 1 600 m² of 4 storey highly serviced biology laboratory extension on a small grassed area adjacent the building albeit with significant existing service duct and services.
The accommodation required comprises teaching labs, research labs, support spaces and offices together with modifications of the existing building in 3 distinct areas:
- Improvements to ground floor entrance, toilets and provision of new staircase links to existing building,
- Adaptations and upgrading to 2 nr existing labs at first and second floor level,
- Utilise existing level three roof to provide roof top plant room to and lab accommodation.
The existing Huxley building's teaching and research activities will require to continue in operation throughout the construction period with the works to be carried out requiring both phased possession and sectional completion of works.
