Quantitative Survey of health-seeking behaviours in Superdiverse neighbourhoods

Quantitative survey using a preconceived questionnaire focused on health-seeking behaviours in two super-diverse neighbourhoods in Birmingham.

• a.The questionnaire needs to be completed by 600 residents, which includes 300 residents each in the neighbourhoods of i) Edgbaston and ii) Handsworth.

• b.An appropriate sampling approach is required. A diverse range of respondents MUST be reached. The survey company must administer the survey in multiple languages and letters or requests for participation must be multi-lingual to ensure that those residents for whom English is not a primary language are able to take part in sufficient numbers. The diversity of the sample – expected to include new migrants and ethnic minorities - is a key feature of this survey. The survey company must convince the tendering organisation of their ability to deliver on this aspect of the survey.

• c.The project requires the survey company to generate an appropriate sample, to carry out the fieldwork for the survey, to code the data and to prepare a clean dataset for the research team to subsequently analyse. It is important to emphasise that we are concerned with the quality of the data collection and processing procedures in addition to cost.

• d.All data collection must take place via face-to-face interviews as a first preference - or via telephone as a second preference (to be agreed with University of Birmingham). All interviewees must be over the age of 18.

• e.The questionnaire is expected to take 30 minutes per each sampled resident – some interviews to complete the questionnaire will take considerably less time, others a little more.

The creation of an electronic interface on which survey data can be inputted and automatically analysed. As part of the contract we expect that the interface developed by the contractor will be made available to our partner universities in Sweden and possibly Portugal.

Those tendering for this work should also provide an account of their experience of carrying out nationally representative surveys of individuals in households using a range of sampling methods and involving face-to-face interviews.

The total cost should be exclusive of VAT (VAT must be shown separately) and shown on the basis of:

• project design;
• pre-test and pilot;
• briefing and debriefing sessions;
• fieldwork costs;
• cost of boosters (based on numbers specified in tender) and marginal cost of extra interviews;
• coding and data processing;
• project management and professional time;
• overheads.
