description

A rapid survey of the coastline in the 1980's highlighted the loss of archaeological sites as a problem and identified a number of important sites under threat. Since that time, only two of these sites have been targeted by archaeological excavation and recording so there remain many more that have not, including a Scheduled Monument Iron Age hillfort at Seaford Head.

It is proposed to conduct the project in two distinct phases. This contract concerns the first phase only, which is a desk based assessment of existing data and identification of the archaeological sites in respect of their position on the coastline and potential erosion rates. Through the assessment of existing historic environmental data and coastal erosion data, the project will identify the archaeology at potential risk from erosion along a section of coastline from Seaford to Eastbourne.
