description
For the provision of up to 47 Ambulance Clinical Placements with NHS Ambulance Trusts. Health Education England (HEE) is mandated by the Government to work with the MOD ‘to enhance the existing capability of the Defence Medical Service either through up-skilling of the existing workforce or by supporting the training of new entrants’. An EMT award is considered by HEE and the DMS to be most appropriate and is achieved through an 8 week didactic course and 750 hours (20 wks) of clinical practice placements, of which not less than 15wks must be in a Pre-Hospital Emergency Care (PHEC) setting. There are no suitable military units in which to conduct the PHEC clinical practice placements, so these will have to be undertaken within Ambulance Trusts. In order for Defence Medics to access training placements within every Ambulance Trust, they must have a level of competence acceptable to them all. Access to ambulance placements will be achieved through a top level agreement with Health Education England and the Association of Ambulance Chief Executives (AACE) who will liaise and broker placements with the individual Ambulance Trusts across the UK in support of the new Defence Medic programme.
