description

One of the eight providers awarded a contract in TLIF Round 1, Ruth Miskin Training, is delivering a two-year literacy professional development programme based upon Ruth Miskin Training's Read Write Inc. systematic synthetic phonics approach. It includes phonics, reading and writing and is underpinned by pedagogical theory and research into how children, and adults, learn.

The programme aims to provide a professional and leadership development offer that meets the needs of schools and improves the quality of teachers and effective teaching in classrooms.

Each school participating in the programme receives:

Two-day literacy training for a primary school middle leader (designated by the programme as a Reading Leader) prior to in-school training.
Two-day literacy training for all staff.
Two one-day leadership professional development training sessions for the headteacher and middle leaders.
10 in-school professional development days in year 1 and a further 6 days in year 2 with the leadership team and teachers with a focus on the slowest progress 20% of children.
Leadership and teacher confidence and knowledge surveys.
Data-driven sessions at each in-school professional development day with the headteacher and Reading Leader.
Access to professional development films that provide examples of good practice in the classroom and how reading leaders can provide effective face-to-face feedback.
Email and Skype support from Ruth Miskin Training consultants.

In addition to this support, Ruth Miskin Training consultants work with the Reading Leaders to embed a weekly coaching cycle of practice, observation and feedback for teaching staff.

When the contracted was awarded in September 2017 Ruth Miskin Training aimed to recruit 72 schools and reach 216 leaders, 936 classroom teachers and 936 teaching assistants, totalling 2088 staff.

As a result of this variation, RMT will recruit a further 36 schools and minimum 1044 participants onto the programme with delivery commences from September 2018 and ending March 2020.

Additional information: The original contract awarded was for the value of £1,056,290.

The variation of the contract is worth £516,820 bringing the total expected spend inclusive of all expenses but excluding VAT to £1,573,110.
