description
The Science Museum Group and the Helen Hamlyn Trust have a shared ambition: to spark curiosity and enquiry among primary school children aged 4 to 7 through engaging them with museum collections.
Together we developed the Early Years and Learning project; a pioneering collaboration led by the Science Museum Group's (SMG) Learning Research and Resources team in partnership with the Helen Hamlyn Centre for Pedagogy (HHCP). This ground-breaking research and development is closing the gap in knowledge and experience across the museum sector on young children's object engagement and how to support early years practitioners, teachers, and teaching assistants in this endeavor.
Through a unique partnership of practitioner and academic expertise we identified innovative ways of engaging young children with STEM related museum objects in phase 1 of the project, which took place at the Science Museum between 2019-2022.
We are now embarking on phase 2 of the project, which will see us putting research findings into practice through the SMG Academy Team, a team that delivers inspirational, research-informed training nationally and internationally to teachers, STEM professionals and museum practitioners.
