description

The Department for Transport (DfT) has a requirement to conduct a survey in 2021 to measure the number of vehicles on the road which do not have valid Vehicle Excise Duty (VED). This is to be achieved by surveying vehicles at selected sites to record information on vehicle registration marks with accompanying images of the vehicles being observed in traffic, which are then referenced against relevant official vehicle record databases.

The information collected will be used by DfT and the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) for a variety of statistical purposes. The primary objective is to estimate the levels of VED evasion, although the survey results will also be used to estimate the prevalence of foreign registered vehicles on UK roads and other characteristics of road traffic as required.
