description

The proposed study involves the use of a High Performance Hot Smoke testing machine inside the Saltash Tunnel to test and investigate the following four issues:

  1. Capability and use of the existing ventilation system for the control of smoke.
  2. Live testing of the recently installed smoke detection and evacuation system.
  3. Testing of the fire and rescue service in a smoke-filled tunnel and the use of the existing life safety systems and current response procedures.
  4. Observation of human reaction within a smoke-filled tunnel testing evacuation procedure and accessibility for people with reduced mobility.

It is intended that the Hot Smoke Testing machine and ventilation study will be completed by the Consultant, the emergency services and tunnel user's element shall be coordinated by Highways England staff. This approach should prove better value for money and will feed into the VM evidence for the upcoming refurbishment works planned for RIS 2 & 3.
