description
The University of Sheffield wishes to invite tenders for a Construction Design and Management (CDM) Principal Contractor Consultancy Resource for COMPASS on behalf of the Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre, Castings Group at Catcliffe, South Yorkshire.
The AMRC has recently won HICOMS funding for an 'automated, large scale composites manufacturing centre', to create large scale composite components, to support global composite manufacturing companies and end users.
The finished and equipped facility will be known as 'COMPASS' (Composites at Speed and Scale) and the address is:- The University of Sheffield
AMRC Factory 2050-Mark III
Europa Avenue
Sheffield
S9 1ZA
This facility will house a significant amount of high value equipment including:-
| • | High Volume Deposition Cell - including robots, guide rails etc. |
| • | 24,000kN Hydraulic Press |
| • | Large Composites Curing Oven and Oven Feed-In Table |
| • | Consolidation Station |
| • | Resin Injection System |
| • | Heating Units |
| • | Chilled Water Cooling System |
| • | Robot Machining Cell |
We have sourced and placed orders for the above equipment and all suppliers have been informed that they will be expected to work under guidance and instruction of the University's nominated lead contractors (under CDM regulations/requirements).
The University of Sheffield/AMRC is looking to engage with a consultant or organisation specialising in CDM/Health and Safety provisions and centred around carrying out certain roles and responsibilities of a 'Principal Contractor' and specifically the installation and commissioning of high value equipment within a hi-tech research and development, manufacturing facility.
It is envisaged that the contract will be completed by 31st December 2025 (with a long stop completion date of 31st March 2026).
The keys to the facility are expected to be formally signed off and handed over to the AMRC in January 2025.
A broad timeline for the engagement of a CDM contractor is envisaged to be as follows:-

| • | 1st January 2025 - 30th September 2025 - Onsite in Sheffield and working a full working week (35 hours) |
| • | 1st October 2025 - 31st December 2025 - Onsite in Sheffield and ramping down activity (approximately 21-14 hours per week). |
