Bournemouth University
At Bournemouth University, our vision is ‘‘Creating the most stimulating, challenging, and rewarding university experience in a world-class learning community by sharing our unique fusion of excellent education, research and professional practice and inspiring our students, graduates and staff to enrich the world.” At the heart of this vision is a powerful fusion of research, education and professional practice, creating a unique academic experience where the sum is greater than the component parts. By combining inspirational teaching, world-class research and the latest thinking in the professions, we create a continuous and fruitful exchange of knowledge that stimulates new ideas, learning and thought-leadership.
Bournemouth University has its origins in the early part of the 20th century with the foundation of the former Bournemouth Municipal College. Our modern history began in the 1970s with the creation of the Bournemouth College of Technology. Construction of the new buildings on what was the largest farm in Talbot Village, and is now Bournemouth University’s Talbot Campus, was completed by September 1976. The College was renamed the Dorset Institute of Higher Education and, in 1990, was designated Bournemouth Polytechnic. We became Bournemouth University in November 1992.
Bournemouth University has grown to a community of over 18,300 students of whom 1,500 are from 130 countries outside the EU. Within the next 10 years, BU expects student numbers to increase above 20,000.
With our Lansdowne Campus near the centre of Bournemouth and our Talbot Campus three miles inland on the boundary of Bournemouth and Poole, Bournemouth University is an important player in the local economy. Bournemouth is a long-established tourist destination and as Britain’s premier seaside holiday resort, attracts visitors from the UK and beyond.
We have c1500 staff and an annual turnover of c£135m.
Bournemouth University’s profile is increasingly national and international as its academic achievements become widely recognised.
The University comprises four Faculties:
| • | Health and Social Sciences |
| • | Management |
| • | Media and Communication |
| • | Science and Technology |
