  1. Background to the University

The Manchester Metropolitan University, (the University), is the largest campus-based undergraduate University in the UK. Locally, it is a major economic contributor, with 37,000 students and 4,300 staff. The University has two main campuses located at Crewe and Manchester.

The University Estates Directorate, as part of the Services Group, provides a world class built environment to underpin the Universities mission. We aim to be in the upper quartile rating for services (Student Barometer) and rigorously benchmark our services to identifying best practises to raise the standards of service delivery.

  1. Background to the Requirement

The MMU estate is a varied portfolio of more than 30 buildings across two distinct campus areas in central Manchester and Crewe. The University Estates Directorate has the responsibility to provide a first class environment for our students; key to this is ensuring that our grounds are safe, maintained to a high standard and well presented. The contractor in compliance with the associated Contract Work Standards issued, will achieve this in a flexible manner in support of site access or working time restrictions that may apply in support of the University learning, business and student accommodation requirements.

The key objectives of this contract are summarised under the following categories:

Soft landscaping

Includes all grassed areas, green roofs, existing plantings and trees. All areas are to be well maintained in a healthy condition and the creation of a visually attractive landscape is crucial. The Birley wetland area must also be kept free from weeds, litter in order to create a diverse and rich new aquatic habitat.

In addition, all identified interior and courtyard plantings will be similarly maintained, with soil levels topped up and ensuring they are watered regularly.

Grounds Maintenance

All tarmac and paved or blocked areas must be well maintained in an attractive, accessible and open condition. They should be free from weeds, invasive growth, graffiti, spillage or chewing gum. During severe, cold weather, all identified hard landscaping areas (including vehicle routes) are to be gritted and maintained to high level, to ensure the environment remains a safe to users.
