Make Smoking Invisible - Smokefree High street project

Barnsley's 'Make Smoking Invisible' programme of work began in 2016 and the achievements to date are: • All our 24 key play parks across the borough are now smokefree • Barnsley was the first place in the north to have an outdoor smoke free public space. The Town Hall Centenary Square became smoke free on 30th June 2017 marking the ten year anniversary of smoke free legislation. • Our market is now smokefree - another northern first. • We launched smokefree schools attracting regional and national media attention and all primary schools will become smokefree from September 2018. • Barnsley is the only local authority, to enforce the smoking in cars legislation. 'Make Smoking Invisible' received Highly Commended at the 2017 LGC Awards, therefore we know what we are doing is the right thing but we need to keep this momentum going if we are to achieve the vision of having a smokefree generation in Barnsley by 2025. To build on the existing smokefree areas, the next stage is 'Smokefree High Streets'. As with the other smokefree areas we would like to implement it through the development of a social norms programme.
