description

Highways England is looking to set up a contract to support activity to invest up to £11M of Air Quality Designated Funding in delivery of energy storage systems (ESS) at a number of motorway service areas (MSAs).

The ESS project will contribute to the Government's commitment of providing a minimum of six high-powered electric vehicle charge points per MSA by 2023 by enabling the installation of ESS at locations where electricity grid capacity is insufficient to support delivering the commitment within the required timescales. This is high priority activity for Government set out as an ambition in the project rapid policy paper and subsequently committed as a 'key stat' in the Department for Transport's Decarbonising Transport - A Better, Greener Britain .
