Notice summary: DECC is looking for a contractor to undertake a Solid biomass boiler market research study in order to get a better understanding of the UK biomass boiler market and its supply chain. The output should be a study including analysis of the solid biomass boiler market as well as of the supply chain to the market.
Description: The research is expected to comprise a combination of qualitative and quantitative methods, including both primary (e.g. through face to face or phone interviews with relevant stakeholders) and secondary (e.g. literature study) research.
There are a number of key objectives and research questions that the research should address. Specifically:
What does the biomass market look like?
| - | Historical and current annual biomass boiler sales (2008 – 2014) |
| - | Segmentation by type of fuel (pellet, chip, log), specifying which fuels are RHI eligible and non-eligible, with a stronger focus on the RHI eligible part of the market |
| - | Segmentation by domestic / non domestic market (with the threshold of 45kW as the maximum for domestic boiler) |
| - | Market forecast up to 2018 |
| - | Qualitative analysis of how these figures have been affected by the RHI and other government policies, as well as by other factors such as energy prices, technology advances, economic growth and installers awareness |
What does the biomass supply chain look like?
Equipment and installation supply chain
| - | Average MSP for a typical domestic and non-domestic boiler |
| - | Average installation cost for a typical domestic & non-domestic boiler |
| - | Average end–user price for a typical domestic and non-domestic boiler |
| - | Average end-user price for different types of fuel (pellet, chip, log), specifying which fuels are RHI eligible and non-eligible |
| - | Number of suppliers to the market / product portfolio / market shares of the major suppliers |
| - | Description of the distribution channel with focus on the role of distributors and installers, including discounts and margins in the distribution channel |
| - | Approximate number of biomass boiler installers |
| - | Brief company profiles for the most important manufacturers and installers |
Fuel supply chain
- High-level overview of the structure and prospects for the solid biomass fuel supply chain split by end-use segments (small non-domestic, large non-domestic, domestic).
