Historic England is a non-Departmental Public Body created by statute in 1983. It was formerly known as 'English Heritage' but changed its name to 'Historic England' (HE) in 2015. We are the government's independent expert advisory service for England's historic built environment, providing advice and guidance to local authorities, property owners and the public. We champion historic places and help people to care for them, now and in the future.

In 2015 Historic England formed a charity called the 'English Heritage Trust' (EHT) to which Historic England has delegated responsibility for caring for over 400 historic buildings, monuments and sites. These are located all over England, sometimes in remote areas. Historic England provides Information and Management Technology (IMT) services to the English Heritage Trust.
