Intermediate Minor Oral Surgery Services

NEL CSU on behalf of NHS England London Region - Intermediate Minor Oral Surgery (IMOS), London Region project

An Intermediate Minor Oral Surgery (IMOS) Commissioning Working Group (NHS England, London Region) was formed in September 2015. This project group is developing a commissioning proposal for the future procurement of IMOS services across London, taking into account the findings from a recent analysis of current service provision, including a public health needs analysis. Findings include: a lack of equity of service provision and a clear needs-provision gap for IMOS services in some parts of London.

A national guide for commissioning oral surgery provision is the approved reference point with regard to the future commissioning of dental services. It includes illustrative patient journeys and complexity assessments which the London Region Dental Commissioners will consider, along with the needs assessment phase findings, when developing the commissioning proposal and service specifications.

In order to move towards a more consistent contracting approach for these services across London, the intention is for a procurement process to commence by May 2016, with new contracts commencing 1st April 2017.
