description
Background & Context
| 5. | We are committed to developing Scotland’s circular economy –Making Things Last, our circular economy strategy, sets out the opportunities to keep materials in use for as long as possible. |
| 6. | We want Scotland to move towards a circular economy where our resources are kept in high value for as long as possible and more of the re-processing of recyclable material is carried out in Scotland. |
| 7. | Through the proposed circular economy bill, the Scottish Government will continue to advance Scotland’s ambitions for the circular economy through measures which will encourage the re-use of products and reduce waste. It will enable further action to tackle our reliance on single-use items. |
| 8. | The circular economy bill is one part of a wider range of policies aimed at reducing waste in Scotland, and moving towards a more circular economy. |
| 9. | The Scottish Government will lead from the front, changing how we do things and how we can have a greener and more circular approach. |
| 10. | The proposals in the bill include: powers to introduce a charge for environmentally harmful items such as single-use disposable beverage cups; mandatory reporting of waste and unwanted surplus on items such as food and textiles/clothing; powers to set targets for consumption reduction; a strengthened approach to household recycling collection services; and, greater penalties on waste crime and littering from vehicles. |
