description
A programme of engagement is required with the market traders in the masterplan’s development and the area’s future transformation for a period of two years.
Engagement should harness traders’ knowledge of the operation and its future potential to deliver market building(s) and spaces that can be vibrant and successful, supporting businesses to develop and flourish, working with the design team to put into practice and test trader and operational requirements.
Engagement will need to involve direct liaison with market traders that presents a clear understanding of the opportunity in the context of the city’s growth story, its future challenges and opportunities.
Establishing a good relationship with market traders will be central to their successful engagement in the transformation of the area. Engagement will need to take account of the various sensitivities relevant to the different aspects of Birmingham Smithfield and the wider Big City Plan. The successful bidder will have a clear understanding of these sensitivities as well as a passion for the city and its future transformation.
The City Council are commissioning a separate consultant to identify what format a vibrant market offer at Birmingham Smithfield should take and the requirements of a building(s) and/or space to accommodate it. The programme of engagement should involve engaging market traders in working with the design team in formulating a concept for the market building(s) and or space. Both consultant teams will be expected to liaise in the development of their individual commissions and report to City Council officers overseeing both the commissions and outputs.
