The ISIS neutron and muon source is a world leading facility for scientific research in many varied directions, for which institutions and users come from across the globe to specifically use the facilities. The facilities are vast and include aspects such as the ability to perform experiments and research with neutron and muon beams as well as complimentary experiments and sample screening with laboratory instruments. This is achieved by ISIS possessing a number of offline laboratories available to all users in support of the main beamline research. One such facility is the Materials Characterisation Laboratory (MCL). This laboratory houses a wide suite of state of the art analytical instrumentation which is vital to the support of the neutron and muon experiments.
It has been highlighted that a bespoke Small Angle Xray Scattering system (SAXS) is much needed to compliment the beamlines which currently already exist at ISIS. In particular this would include the ability to perform measurements at a high publication standard which would complement the Small Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) beamlines, but also provide a sample screening process for samples before ISIS neutron beamtime begins as not all users have access to this type of system.
This would increase the capacity of users/institutions which pass through the facility as users, hence increasing the output. Given the wide range in research directions, ISIS is subject to a wide range of users ranging from experienced to non-expert (novice) users who are likely to have no experience in this field. Therefore the system must operate to a high standard, be intuitive and easy to use and maintain.
