description

Spent nuclear fuel and other appropriate waste is generated from the operation of nuclear reactors and needs to be safely managed following removal from reactor cores. One option for storage is to place the fuel in casks designed for both storage and transport, which is defined as a Dual Purpose Cask (DPC).

ONR is carrying out a research project into dual purpose casks. The aim of the research will be to gather information regarding the UK need to store various radio active material packages at various sites for various amounts of time before transporting by various routes to a geological disposal facility, where they may then be stored again, with or without modification.

The research will inform an integrated regulatory approach within ONR for site and transport needs.
