description
Hoveton Great Broad is situated in the heart of The broads, Norfolk. It is currently in poor ecological condition and in need to lake restoration. Natural England has put together a restoration plan for the broad, which also includes proposals to improve the access to it and people’s understanding, appreciation and enjoyment of it. The resultant project – The Hoveton Wetlands Restoration project - has recently been awarded a total of £4M of external funding by the EU Life fund and the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), enabling Natural England to commence the delivery phase. This is now the largest lake restoration project in Britain.
Lake restoration will be achieved through a combination of sediment removal and biomanipulation. In order to inform the biomanipulation element of the project, baseline surveys of the fish population of the lake need to be undertaken. Point Abundance Sampling by Electrofishing (PASE) is a survey technique that has been used successfully on a number of broads to inform biomanipulation and record its success. PASE will be one of a number of techniques used to provide a baseline assessment of the fish population of Hoveton Great Broad
