Remote electronic monitoring systems

The MMO is currently trialling REM systems for the potential use of monitoring compliance with the Landing Obligation regulations. The MMO also gathers data on levels of discarding and the impact of changes of gear use and behaviour on discard rates. In addition, scientific work is undertaken with Cefas using REM data to support government scientific research objectives.

The REM systems currently on board the vessels are currently out of warranty and components of the systems had a high failure rate in 2016. Spares are no longer available for these systems. The MMO therefore wishes to replace the systems with newer versions that are still in warranty and less likely to suffer component failure.
