In the UK Marine Strategy Part Two (http://chartingprogress.defra.gov.uk/) sets out the UK's approach to monitoring the marine environment. For marine litter this includes the OSPAR Beach Litter Monitoring Programme. This monitoring programme helps meet the legal requirements of the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (MSFD) to monitor litter on beach/coastal zones. Given the transboundary nature of marine litter, the UK is coordinating its approach at the regional sea level. To this end, the UK and all other OSPAR Contracting Parties recently agreed a marine litter regional action plan and have agreed to cooperate on monitoring for MSFD as well also under the auspices of OSPAR.
