description

The ONS is looking to identify and engage with industry partners to help bring third party data and/or expertise to access better and more relevant data sources. This will help improve the quality and usefulness of official statistics that decision makers, businesses and citizens need.

This Request for Information concentrates on Trade in Services and that ONS are seeking to develop partnerships with organisations that hold information about sea freight revenues on imports of all goods into the UK, by non-UK operated ships and freight revenues of non-UK operated ships for transporting all goods around the UK coast.

ONS are interested in the following data, to be delivered at least quarterly:

  • oSea freight revenues earned on all goods imported into the UK on ships. It is desirable that these revenues only cover non-UK operated ships (commercial operator).
  • oAn acceptable substitute is total freight revenue on imports of all goods into the UK on any nationality operated ships.
  • oSea freight revenues earned on all goods transported around the UK coast by non-UK operated ships. It is desirable that data can be provided for total freight earnings for coastwise transportation of all goods around the UK by all non-UK operated ships (commercial operator).
  • oAn acceptable substitute is providing the following two freight rates:
  • 1.A freight rate for shipping dry goods to the UK, ideally an average $ per tonne rate for shipping coal from Rotterdam.
  • 2.A freight rate for shipping wet goods around the UK coast, ideally the average $ per barrel rate for shipping oil from Sullom Voe to Milford Haven.
  • oGeographical breakdown for the international and coastwise freight revenues using the nationality of the ships commercial operators.

The types of organisations that should consider partnering with us include:

  • oSea freight operators licensed to freight goods into and around the UK
  • oOrganisations that compile data, based on sea freight revenues on imported goods into the UK and transportation goods around the UK.
  • oShipping register companies that have the relevant information to model this data.

Supporting information:

It would be very useful if any organisations interested in providing data to the ONS could respond and include indicative costs for how much this data would cost to produce, timescales for how long it would take to produce this data, how the data will be produced (i.e. survey, model, own data etc) and the frequency it could be provided on an ongoing basis (at least quarterly).
