description
| 1.1 | The Police Remuneration Review Body (PRRB) makes recommendations to the Home Secretary each year on police pay and conditions for officers at Constable, Sergeant, Inspector, Chief Inspector, Superintendent and Chief Superintendent rank in England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The Senior Salaries Review Body (SSRB) considers the pay of senior staff in the public sector and in 2015, for the first time, considered the remuneration of chief police officer ranks (Assistant Chief Constable to Chief Constable, or Commander to Commissioner within London). Part of the Home Office’s responsibilities is to provide evidence to both the PRRB and SSRB as to the affordability of pay options, the unique role and status of police officers and ministers’ views on pay and conditions. Data on police workforce are required to inform and feed into the evidence that will be submitted by the Home Office to both review bodies. |
| 2.1 | The PRRB and SRRB review evidence submitted by both the Home Office and police staff associations to assist them in making recommendations to the Government on police pay and conditions. In order to consider the remuneration of police officers, the review bodies require a large quantity of data about the police workforce. For the most recent ‘2013/14 PRRB Census return’ the data was collected in 2015 from police forces by a contractor arranged through the Home Office on behalf of the review bodies. Although the Home Office arrange for the census to be completed, the Office for Manpower Economics (OME) provides the secretariat function for both review bodies. |
