description

Lesser black backed gulls have undergone recent population declines, making them a conservation priority.

However, it is also subject to licensed control at some sites – under the general licence – on conservation grounds, or because of risk to human health and safety. The Ribble and Alt Estuary Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) / Special Protection Area (SPA) population have been subject to proposals by British Aerospace (BAe) to cull due to the risk of collision with aircraft. Similarly, other populations outside of SPAs are also subject to culling under the general licence, but may have originated from SPA colonies.
