description
The National Physical Laboratory requirement is for a set of up to 8 (eight) bi-directional, dual channel erbium-doped fibre amplifiers (EDFAs) to support the long-distance dissemination of optical frequency standards. Bi-directional means that light can propagate in either direction through the erbium-doped fibre, the optical path being exactly the same. Dual channel means that each unit contains two independent EDFAs with a common control and monitoring interface.
The signals to be amplified are expected to be at and around 1572 nm (ITU 100 GHz DWDM channel 07), however future use may extend across a larger wavelength band.
Reliability is a key requirement for these bi-directional EDFAs to ensure uninterrupted operation over months when deployed in the field. The bi-directional EDFAs will be integrated into an IT-based management system. This implies the need for remote control and monitoring using standards-based communication interfaces and protocols.
