description

Lancaster City Council has responsibility under the Building Act 1984 to protect the public from dangerous buildings and structures.

During office hours such reports of dangerous building are reported to its Building Control Team within the Regeneration and Planning Service. Outside normal working hours the council responds via its Duty Emergency Incident Officer (DEIO).

In recent years the district has witnessed a number of high profile dangerous building incidents including the Megazone fire on Marine Road West - Morecambe in June 2014, the Inspire Gym Fire on Penny Street – Lancaster in March 2016 and the building issues caused by Storm Desmond in December 2015.

All incidents have required input from the local authority and an immediate response including the closing of roads, scaffolding of property and assessment of a buildings structural integrity.
