description
Birmingham Smithfield presents an opportunity to create a successful new destination in the city centre that places markets at its heart. There is an opportunity to build on the market’s existing strengths and enhance it in an improved purpose built building(s) and/or space. Any plans must fit in with and facilitate/enable wider regeneration of the site and area.
To ensure the market’s long term viability and success as a key part of the development advice is required to understand what form a vibrant market offer should take and the requirements of a building(s) and/or space to accommodate it. Advice should comprise three key elements:
| • | Review of existing markets, buildings and requirements |
| • | Concept Design to consider options and a preferred scheme that is compatible with wider regeneration |
| • | Implementation Plan and Technical Report |
Engagement with market and trader representatives will be key in delivering this advice, understanding the markets operation and future potential to deliver market building(s) and spaces that can be vibrant and successful, supporting businesses to develop and flourish. The City Council are commissioning a separate consultant, a Markets Engagement Officer, to engage directly with market traders in the masterplan’s development and the area’s future transformation. Both consultant teams will be expected to liaise in the development of their individual commissions and report to City Council officers overseeing both commissions and the outputs
