Lot 2 Lowland Raised Bog Restoration Framework Contract - Bowness Common SSSI, Rewetting work to Intact and Degraded Lowland Raised Bog

The bog edges of Bowness Common, SSSI units 10 and 11, have been extensively cut in the past for domestic peat use, and there are perimeter and internal drains in peat. The peat cutting and drainage have dried out the surface of the moss and allowed air into the peat, resulting in the loss of peat-forming conditions, and colonisation of bracken and birch scrub.

Re-wetting restoration work is required to remove the long term threats to recovering SSSI condition
