description
The scheme comprises a major junction improvement of the existing roundabout and approach roads around the A650/A61 at Newton Bar, Wakefield. It involves the construction of a new signalised 'hamburger' roundabout (enabling a one-way south bound link through the central island of the roundabout), upgrade of adjacent signal controlled junction, additional traffic lanes, the provision of a shared cycle/pedestrian footway, signalised pedestrian/cycle crossings and the extension of the existing bus/cycle lane along the A61 Leeds Road corridor. Works include: -The reconfiguration of the A650 (north) arm of the Newton Bar roundabout junction and reallocation of lane usage to allow for two designated ahead lanes and a designated left turn lane for traffic travelling to the A61 Leeds Road (north) and A6194 Bar lane (east)
-The provision of an additional two lane carriageway through the existing roundabout to allow for southbound movements from A650 north to A61 Leeds Road

-The reconfiguration of A61 Leeds Road (south) to accommodate more direct access between the A650 (south) and A650 (north) arm of the junction. This includes a designated two-lane carriageway to the west of the junction for traffic travelling northbound onto the A650 (north) and ultimately the M1 -A lengthened bus and cycle lane on the A61 Leeds Road (south) arm of the junction that extends for an additional 90m
-The relocation of the 'Leeds Road Newton Bar' bus stop which is currently positioned to the south of the Newton Bar car park
-460m of new 3m wide shared footway/cycleway will be provided to the west of the A61 Leeds Road northbound. 982m of existing footway to the north and east of the A61 will be widened to 3.0m and designated for shared footway/cycleway
-Provision of signal controlled toucan crossings and designated footways/cycleways across all arms of the reconfigured Newton Bar roundabout
