description

This document has been prepared to set-out the University’s requirements and enable potential Suppliers to submit accurate proposals.

The Soils and Ecosystem Ecology Laboratory within LEC is a rapidly expanding facility that supports the research and teaching needs of approximately 20+ academic staff, PDRA’s and PhD’s, plus 20+ extra annual UG and Masters dissertation students per year. The group relies on the smooth and, as far as possible, continuous running of all essential laboratory instrumentation. A key component of the groups scientific capability is the ability to accurately, quickly and reliably measure total organic and inorganic carbon and total nitrogen in river and run-off water samples and extracted soil samples.

The groups current TOC analyser is now nearly 20 years old and has been superseded by significantly more modern and reliable technology and software. In order to maintain the high standards expected of, and demanded by, a first class research facility, the Soils and Ecosystem Ecology Laboratory has been awarded funds to replace the old TOC with a new state-of-the-art TOC analyser that is capable of measuring total organic and inorganic carbon simultaneously with total nitrogen. It is anticipated that the effective operational life of the instrument will be 10+ years.

This purchase supports the University’s objective to maintain its place as a world class research establishment.
