description

Following the UK referendum decision to leave the European Union, there is both a strong need to input to development of replacement UK chemical regulations, and an opportunity to develop more effective and bespoke approaches to environmental protection. In particular, Defra and the Environment Agency are focussing on developing better regulatory tools to deliver chemicals legislation requirements, and ensuring that environmental considerations are understood and incorporated appropriately into the UK regulatory response.

This is directly relevant to the recently published Defra 25 Year Environment Plan (25 YEP), which highlights specific areas of focus as minimising the risk of chemical contamination in our water, and developing an early warning system for future chemicals of concern.

In order to achieve this and expand our abilities in the future, Defra plans to target resource at selected activities that provide greatest progress to meeting these aims. A key area for this work plan, and the tendered project is development of our understanding of the fate of POPs emissions in the environment, and the key areas to target remediation.
