description

The University currently owns and operates two Thermo Fisher Scientific X-ray Photoelectron Spectrometers: K-Alpha and Theta Probe.

These two instruments currently run on pre-Windows 10 computers, having not been upgraded since purchase. For each instrument we require:

  • i)Data system upgrade
  • ii)USB3 Camera upgrade

The system upgrade must be compatible with the existing instruments' features:

K-Alpha:

  • 180° hemispherical analyser
  • 128-channel detector
  • scanned and snapshot spectroscopy modes
  • dual-beam charge neutralisation
  • monoatomic Ar ion and Polyatomic Gas-Cluster Ion Beam (GCIB) source
  • cluster sizes of 1000 and 2000 atoms
  • depth profiling of metals and oxides as well as polymers and multi-layers

Theta Probe:

  • 180° spherical sector analyser
  • 60° Parallel ARXPS (no need to tilt the sample)
  • scanned and snapshot spectroscopy modes
  • dual-beam charge neutralisation
  • monoatomic Ar ion and Polyatomic Gas-Cluster Ion Beam (GCIB) source
  • cluster sizes of 1000 and 2000 atoms
  • depth profiling of metals and oxides as well as polymers and multi-layers
  • possibility to be linked with Raman spectrometer, for in situ measurements of XPS with Raman

This purchase is being funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC)
