description

The roof mounted chiller at the Institute of Ophthalmology (Building 6B) is not functioning and is beyond economic repair and the University is to replace this at the first opportunity. The chiller generally supports the building with comfort conditioning but there are areas that are critical and these are currently being supported by another chiller via a plate heat exchanger. The opportunity this presents will also be taken to replace the associated chilled water pumps and alter the controls strategy to ensure more economic use of the installed plant.

Due to the nature of the areas cooling has to be maintained at all times. In order to mechanically remove the existing chiller it will be necessary to isolate the building chilled water services and install the necessary enabling works package. During this period it will be necessary to install temporary equipment (Which will be undertaken separately by the Estates Department). In addition to the replacement of the chillers it is intended to replace both of the existing chilled water pumps that are at the end of the economic life.
