ICT Disaster Recovery Solution

Southport and Ormskirk NHS Trust is looking to invest in a technical disaster recovery solution that will enhance recovery times. The current infrastructure is based on dual Dell Compellent SC8000 SAN’s – one located at the Southport datacentre and one located at the Ormskirk datacentre. Datacentres are approximately 8 miles apart and connected by 2 x 1GB dedicated LAN extension links providing layer 2 connectivity and asynchronous replication with minimal latency. The Trust operates VMWare ESXi VSphere V5.5 and approximately has 90% of all servers virtualised. In total there are approximately 220 servers. Data replication operates at a SAN level utilising Dell technology.

As part of a wider disaster recovery review, the Trust’s IT dept. is looking to improve capability and simplify the recovery process. Approximately 100 virtual machines are to be protected with a new technology to aid automated and simple failover to a secondary site. Essentially the key business and clinical systems must be recoverable within minutes of a known service issue at the primary site.
