description
The purpose of this project is to identify heritage assets of greatest sensitivity to coastal change - coastal heritage 'priority places' - for use by Historic England and made available as a publically accessible web GIS map for use by other interested organisations and individuals. The project will identify relevant pre-existing data sets and use these to map areas where coastal vulnerability to change coincides with heritage assets. The resulting mapped information will build upon previous work by Historic England (as English Heritage) which identified sites in the English Heritage Estate at risk of coastal erosion and flooding (Hunt 2011) by including heritage assets not in the national collection. The resulting map and associated database will enable Historic England to identify those areas most at risk of harm or loss from coastal processes, and therefore to prioritise research and plan future engagement with other organisations, and the public in thinking about the future management of these locations. There has been widespread support for and interest in this project from within Historic England and from external organisations such as CITiZAN and the Environment Agency.
