description

Potential Bidders with the capacity and capability to deliver safe, cost effective custodial healthcare service(s) in Surrey and Sussex Police Force areas were invited to bid to provide the Service

NHS England (South) wished to co-commission a new embedded model of service delivery that best met the needs of the populations across Surrey. The Provider was required to meet the healthcare needs of people in Police Custody and carry out healthcare and forensic examinations on suspects, police personnel subject to assaults or complaints, hospital drink drive cases and sudden death. Each custody suite contains a dedicated medical room for the provider to undertake these duties. There are also occasional requirements to travel outside of the custody (i.e. to an A&E to recover blood samples). The services were traditionally carried out by a doctor but further to recent changes in legislation, can now also be carried out by any healthcare professional including nurses, paramedics and emergency care practitioners. The development of onward referral pathways to relevant services such as A&E, substance misuse, and mental health services form part of the service specification.
