description

The University of Southampton is seeking to appoint a Contractor to deliver Primary Chilled Water System Remedial Works within Building 30 located on the Highfield Campus as outlined below:

Building 30 is currently served by a chilled water system which has 2 no. air cooled screw chillers, manufactured by Trane and located on the roof (level 7). The associated primary pumps and controls for this system are located in the level 6 plant room below the chillers. The existing roof mounted chiller plant and the associated primary distribution system shall be isolated, drained down and removed from the roof and the level 6 plant room. Design, supply and install new packaged air cooled chiller plant on level 7 and associated primary distribution system.

The secondary distribution pumps shall not be changed. The existing chilled water distribution system has an unconventional configuration and as such allowance shall be made for all necessary pipework and ancillary equipment to be modified to enable the installation of a new primary circuit and low loss header .The proposed plant will serve Buildings 30 and 30A. The latter is a 5 storey annex that was constructed adjacent to Building 30. The primary distribution circuit shall connect to a new low loss header located in B30 level 6 plant room.

The new loss header shall be connected to the existing secondary distribution systems to provide a completely operational chilled water system. Allow to make any necessary modifications to the secondary distribution system to enable this installation.

The packaged chiller plant comprises 2 no. chillers which shall be sequenced to optimise energy consumption and to maximise the plant life.

To maintain safe access, allow for a raised walkway platform to be installed over the primary distribution pipework externally.

Building 30A is currently served by a chilled water system which comprises 1 no. air cooled scroll chiller located on level 6 of Building 30 (adjacent to the level 6 plant room). The primary pumps and controls for this system are located in Building 30A in the level 5 plant room. The existing roof mounted chiller plant and the associated primary distribution system shall be isolated, drained down and removed.

Design, supply and install new packaged air cooled chiller plant to the roof and the associated primary distribution system shall be installed within the level 6 plant room. The proposed plant will serve Building 29 which is located adjacent to Building 30 and is being refurbished in 2019.

As such the installation of the chilled water system will be carried out up to and including a low loss header located in the level 6 plant room. The location of the low loss header shall allow sufficient space for the future installation of the secondary distribution pump(s). The new low loss header shall be 200mmØ with 125mmØ flow and return connections. The two redundant process chillers on level 6 of Building 30 shall be removed.
