description
The Torpoint Ferry Service is operated by the Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry Joint Committee on behalf of Cornwall Council and Plymouth City Council.
The Service operates 24/7, 365 days a year, linking Plymouth with South East Cornwall, utilising up to 3 Chain Ferries at peak times.
The Ferries have been in service since 2004/5 and each ferry carries a maximum of 73 vehicles.
The vessels require dry docking every 5 years to enable the classification society (Lloyds Register) to complete mandatory surveys and for the Marine Coastguard Agency (MCA) to complete inspections, both of which provide assurance of Vessel safety and material state. In addition, the dry docking is also the only opportunity to renew underwater coatings and to complete maintenance and defect rectification on systems and equipments that cannot be undertaken in service or afloat. The proposed programme of refits is:
Plym II, September/ October 2018;
Tamar II, April/May 2019;
and Lynher II, April/ May, 2020.
The refits cycle time should be no greater than 28 calendar days from removal of each Ferry from its chains to reinstatement and full return to service.
Tamar Bridge and Torpoint Ferry Joint Committee (TB&TF) will provide the technical supervisory role at the refit location.
There will be a requirement to integrate TB&TF staff maintenance activity, within the overarching refit project management plan.
TB & TF will assist with provision of certain spare parts and also will advise on particular specialist sub- contractors that may be required to undertake specific tasks.
