description

Project Description - Luton and Dunstable Imaging Department

The Employer has an established MRI and X-ray unit within the first floor of Block 59 at Luton and Dunstable University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, Lewsey Road, Luton, Bedfordshire, LU4 0DZ.

The works consist of structural works including foundations and steelworks to form new extension and remodelling of the existing department layout.

The works will be on the ground and first floor of Block 59 and the surrounding departments which will remain in operation, with other floors occupied and in use, for the duration of the works.

The Employer's space within the Block 59 comprises the following departments and services: •Ground Floor: Café, Seating Area, Reception

•First Floor: MRI, X-ray, Renal, CT and Ultrasound

The hospital uses a number of individual building blocks linked together through corridors.

Block 59 building construction comprises a concrete structural frame of slabs, beams and columns. Internal divisions comprise a non-loadbearing plasterboard with door and door frames. The exterior is masonry cavity wall construction with single-glazed framed multi-paned windows and doors. The X-ray and MRI departments are located on the first floor of two different buildings. The X-ray department is within a five-storey building and the MRI department within a two-storey building built at a later date. Existing drawn information suggests the two buildings are independent, yet built within close proximity to one another with the gap bridged at points of access between them. Part of the Works (In room 59/01/130) to be undertaken has a wall shared by both buildings. To the rear of block 59 there is an existing external courtyard which the Works propose to extend into approx. 3.3m depth. The external courtyard at ground floor level is partially filled by a light weight structure which houses the existing Café and seating area. Drainage and ventilation services are located within the rest of the courtyard including a recently installed AHU for Endoscopy.
