The British Antarctic Survey (BAS) undertakes a number of sustained oceanographic and ecosystem observational programmes in the Southern Ocean. These require a number of different types of autonomous vehicle, optimised for data collection to particular tasks. One task is the capability to make routine year-round acoustic surveys of epipelagic (surface 200m) biota to compliment sustained observations of the Antarctic ecosystem at South Georgia, as well as target ecosystem processes in ocean carbon storage.
To fulfil this need BAS requires an autonomous surface vehicle (ASV), equipped with environmental sensors and a wideband scientific echosounder capable of detecting zooplankton from the surface to a depth of 200m.
