description
The British High Commission (BHC) in Ottawa is an eight storey concrete framed office building which was built in the early 1960's and owned by the FCO. The 'Penthouse', which is located on the roof of the building and houses the buildings mechanical plant, is to reclad due to continued cracking/spalling of granite cladding panels. The penthouse has been identified as having the highest risk of further spalling with the potential of debris falling to ground level. The building has had temporary safety measures installed to prevent as far as practicable, more debris falling to road level, but this is a passive measure and will not prevent further deterioration in the granite cladding over time.
The Works are to take place on the FCO's site at the BHC. The site is fully operational and in some areas 24 hours a day, 365 days of the year. The works should cause minimal disruption to users of the site, will need to be carefully planned and phased and will attract a considerable amount of scrutiny from the various stakeholders involved in the project.
