HS2 Circular Economy Opportunity: Market Engagement

The circular economy principles closely align with HS2's commitment to be an exemplar project in that we will strive to limit negative impacts through design, mitigation and by challenging industry standards, as well as looking for environmental enhancements and benefits. We have started to embed the principles through our Sustainability Policy in which we have committed to ‘source and make efficient use of sustainable materials, maximise the proportion of material diverted from landfill and reduce waste’, and ‘deliver low carbon long distance journeys that are supported by low carbon energy’. However, there is the potential for this topic to affect all parts of our organisation and further engagement is required to fully understand the opportunities and the benefits that could be realised.

HS2 Ltd would like to conduct a piece of work to:

• Capture what we already do across the organisation relating to the circular economy;
• Understand what we could do to further adopt circular economy approaches in our business/value chain; and
• Identify where we should focus our efforts in shaping our organisation’s journey towards a circular economy, in order to realise benefits from this for the programme.

Before we commission this piece of work we would like to understand the:

• experience of the market in delivering these services;
• adequacy of the brief; and the
• magnitude of the task.
