description

The ever growing need for housing be it low cost social housing, first time buyer or mixed housing developments is a key strategic concern for many local authorities, county councils and housing associations in the UK, as well as central government. As with many the cost and availability of suitable land with which to conduct any housing development is at a premium, indeed the cost of such land especially in the South and South East of England, makes purchasing a property for many an unfulfilled goal. Medway Council are therefore investigating the potential of developing the space above the car parking facilities it owns and runs. This immediately removes the cost of procuring or selling any land for a potential developer, thus reducing the final cost of the property to the market. The council therefore wishes to understand the market potential and interest for such projects and is inviting prospective developers to submit initial proposals and designs to construct housing above car parks. Following this activity and depending on the level of interest the council is likely to conduct either one to one meetings or a group forum to further understand the potential and scope of works, with the view of running a tender activity.
